Want to Try Pilates Classes on Peloton? Here's the Perfect Guide to Get Started

Do you offer Pilates classes at Peloton? Yes. The best part is that the classes are taught by a variety of instructors from different fields of Peloton workouts.

Peloton Pilates classes fall under the strength category. They involve a lot of stretching and moves that target core stability and spinal alignment. The workout is low-impact and suitable for all levels of Peloton users, including beginners, intermediate, and advanced.

Amazingly, classes on the Peloton treadmill, bike or digital app can be taken as long as you have an active Peloton subscription.

What is Peloton Pilates?

What is Peloton Pilates exactly? Peloton doesn’t offer Reformer classes. Peloton Pilates is Pilates mat classes.

You will be able to do most of your Pilates moves sitting, kneeling, or lying down on your mat. Pilates emphasizes strengthening your core and other deep muscle groups in your body.

Pilates can seem very difficult. You may not think you are doing much in class. You realize that you have sore muscles where you didn’t know they existed. Is that not logical?

Where can I find Pilates classes?

The app also offers Pilates classes similar to Barre Peloton. These classes are available under Peloton strength.

Peloton Pilates classes cannot be taken while you are riding your Peloton bike, or on the Tread. You can still view the classes from your bike tablet.

The Bike Plus can be equipped with a swivelscreen or an aftermarket product such as The Pivot. You can then use your bike for viewing and following along with Pilates classes.

Peloton Pilates is done primarily through an app. The app can be used on a tablet or phone. Two, by going to the Peloton website. Three on a Smart TV broadcasting the Peloton channel.

What to Expect During Pilates Classes on Peloton

What can you expect from class? You will spend a lot of time on the mat. Most of my Pilates classes, I am either on my side or back. You might be able to stand or kneel at times.

Pilates is about strengthening your muscles in a way that strength classes can’t. You can think of micromovements as you would in Barre, but with many more repetitions. Those who curse Pilates are unable to do hundreds of repetitions.

You might also find instructors asking you to do things in class that you will never hear in another. For example, zipping up your pelvic floor. You might be left wondering what they are talking about.

Unless you are a woman in childbearing years (or beyond it like me), then you should not be doing the Kegel exercises. That’s all I have to say. You can also read my review of Kegelbell (a pelvic floor exercise machine)

Pilates is a core-focused workout. You won’t do crunches per se but you can expect to work a lot on your midsection.

Why Peloton Pilates Classes are Important?

Pilates strengthens your primary muscles, which are the foundation for all other workouts like yoga, runs, and rides. All workouts draw strength from the core or the spine, so it is important to strengthen the two. How better to do this than joining a Peloton Pilates class!

Pilates also incorporates mindful moves, stretching, and meditation. It is often mistaken for yoga. However, it does have some moves that are not found in yoga. They add a deeper meaning to your workouts by incorporating the conscious aspect of the exercises.

The best thing about Pilates is that it targets all muscles. The classes will target your core and spine as well as your arms, hamstrings, shoulders and other muscles.

Which Equipment Do You Need for Peloton Pilates Classes?

You don’t need any equipment to take part in the Pilates classes. Your only requirements for the Pilates classes are a yoga mat and possibly a towel.

You can still take Pilates classes even if your equipment is not available and you are using the Peloton digital application.

Think about what you would wear to Barre or yoga when dressing for Pilates. This means that you need clothing that is comfortable and allows for movement, but does not restrict your movements.

Leggings or shorts are fine, but a fitted top should not ride up and go over your head when inverted. For these classes, I prefer tops that have ruching at the sides. They fit well, are flattering and don’t ride up.

Barefoot Pilates

Peloton instructors often teach Pilates classes barefoot. But, I do know many people who use gripper socks or sticky bottoms for Pilates.

These socks are a great choice for someone who sweats a lot. Below are a few of my favorite socks.

Peloton offers a variety of instructors for Pilates classes that are suitable for everyone. They can be found in yoga, meditation and dance.

Who teaches Pilates classes? There are currently 10 Pilates instructors who teach 40+ classes. They are a mixture of strength, yoga and cycling instructors. These instructors include:

What length are Pilates classes?

You can find Pilates classes that fit your schedule, just like all other Peloton classes. Peloton currently offers the following Pilates classes:

  • 10 minutes
  • 15 minutes
  • 20 minutes
  • 30 minutes
  • 45 minutes

There are no 60-minute Pilates classes. I don’t think I could keep that long.

You can have a chance to meet your favorite instructor at other workouts or you can have one as part of your regular workout routine.

Introduction to Pilates classes

Peloton offers a wide range of Intro to Pilates classes, with a variety instructors. These include:

  • Sam Yo gives a 10-minute intro to Pilates
  • 10-minute Introduction to Pilates with Emma Lovewell
  • Aditi Shah gives a 15-minute introduction to Pilates

You’ll find some Pilates classes that have a theme, just like other Peloton offerings. This included music from “In the Heights”, which was recently featured in an Ally Love Pilates class.

Emma Lovewell also offers a Silk Sonic class. Aditi Shah also offered a Bollywood Pilates class to APIHM-Asian Heritage Month and Pacific Islander Heritage Month.

Who Should Take the Peloton Pilates Classes?

Peloton Pilates classes are open to all levels. No matter what your age, gender, or health condition, you can still enjoy Pilates.

Although Pilates classes vary in intensity, you can choose to slow down or increase the intensity according to your preference.

The classes are also varied in length. The shortest class lasts 10 minutes, while the longest can take up to 45 minutes.

Types of Peloton Pilates Classes

Peloton intensity varies, so a classification with an intensity basis. Let’s take a look at each class briefly.

Intro to Pilates

When you are starting Pilates for the first-time, Intro to Pilates should be your first class. These classes provide an overview of Pilates classes, including terminology and basic moves.

The classes last between 10 and 15 minutes, and you won’t feel any sweat. After a few sessions, you’ll be ready to take a real Pilates class.

Beginner Pilates Classes

All Pilates classes are low-impact. The Beginner Pilates classes are great for those who want to give more thought to the moves or are just starting to learn them.

They take longer than the Intro and can last between 20 and 30 minutes. Be prepared to lose some calories and sweat a bit. Anyone can join the class and manage it, even beginners.

Additionally, most instructors of Pilates classes lead the classes. The majority of instructors are either yoga or Intro to Pilates, so it is a thoughtful session.

Intermediate Pilates on Peloton

This class has one of the longest training sessions. It can take between 30 and 45 minutes. The session is intense and includes more advanced moves. This is a great session for those who have done Peloton or have had success with beginner classes.

Classes that are long have the effect of repetitive moves which leads to better results.

Advanced Pilates on Peloton

Advanced classes last between 30 and 45 minutes. They increase endurance and resistance. The classes are for those who have mastered the Pilates moves.

The best thing about Peloton classes, however, is that even advanced workouts are accessible to everyone.

Are Peloton Pilates classes good for recovery?

Peloton Pilates is a great option for active recovery, especially when you are having a rest day.

The classes can also be beneficial for those who are recovering from an injury. Pilates classes were originally created for people who have suffered injuries.

Are Peloton Pilates Classes Worth It?

Yes. Although the intensity of Pilates classes is low, they are vital for all users. They strengthen your body muscles and increase endurance and resistance. It makes it easier to do all the other exercises. It is the foundation for all other workouts, whether they are low, intermediate or advanced. You can also tap into the potential to perform moves and postures that you didn’t know you had.

Can beginners do Pilates classes?

You can also try Pilates for beginners. If that’s you, then I recommend the shorter classes. You might want to try the shorter Pilates classes. Some are designated as Beginner classes.

With the weekly Pilates class on Hardcore calendar, I have never taken a class that lasted more than 20 minutes. Even 20 minutes on the mat is enough to kick my butt.

If you are looking for a more challenging Pilates class, there are Intermediate and Advanced classes. These classes are challenging, but you can still have fun!

Why doesn’t there exist a Pilates basics library?

Finally, I wish Peloton would create a Pilates basics library similar to Yoga. You can learn the individual moves of each discipline, so they aren’t so unfamiliar when you see them in class.

If you haven’t done Kegel exercises, or seen a specialist in pelvic floor, you might not know how to do Pilates while working on your pelvic floor. You might also be confused if the instructor says “hundreds” or calls for “hundreds.” ?"

Final thoughts

Let me tell you, Pilates has made my core stronger than ever. I recently was able do a complete sit up from a laying position. This is not the crunch-a-sit up that you did in middle school PE class. This was actually the first time that I could do this move since 8th grade.

Many of my pelvic floor problems that I had been having since I was in my 50s were also resolved. It was a surprise to me that strengthening my core and other areas of my lower abdomen would make a huge difference. It has. If you have female issues, you will want to include Pilates in your daily routine.
